Krista Van Der Niet
Personal Background
Krista Van Der Niet is a Dutch photographer, living and working in Amsterdam, born in Bathmen, Netherlands in 1978. She always was a creative person since she was a kid, always wanted to do work with her hands when it came to art. Yet it wasn't until she into the Gerrit Rietvield Academy in 1997 that she picked up a camera and begun photography. Photography felt easy and right for her, noticing how simple it was. She was interested in technique of it all, and she continued doing photography ever since.

Style
Whenever she took a photo, she wanted to have that sort of uneasiness to it all. Having someone feel like something was off and not right, while also having someone laugh. She typically would throw some things together, her objects being both natural and unnatural while also keeping it minimalistic. She would also get her things from thrift stores or markets, looking for things that look "interesting" to her.
Philosophy
She really liked staging her photographs and making it look aesthetically pleasing. She started out taking photos outside, yet it wasn't really her cup of tea. She ended up just observing her surroundings and not taking a lot of photos. It wasn't until she started taking photos in studio that she really begun to have fun. She threw in some humor with her unusual crafts, finding the satisfaction she wanted. She gets inspired by any type of art, mainly drawings, sculptures, videos, high and low culture— anything that's interesting and you would typically feel "embarrassed" about.
Influences
In all honesty, I was having a really hard time trying to find a good photographer. I was specifically looking for still life artists cause I'm most comfortable with still life— until I found her. My saviour. Her photographs were so... interesting. So simplistic and minimalistic— it made me feel strange looking at her photos. I loved it. I found myself chuckling at some of them too. It made me realize... photographs can be so simple and strange and still look amazing. I thought that what you choose has to be perfect looking and amazing... but Van Der Niet proved me wrong. HENSE why she's my saviour.
